Where has Ms. Q Been?

Sorry, students and parents, Ms. Q got off track!!! But I am back and ready to rumble.........

We have 2 weeks until Spring Break and 4 weeks until the Science Section of the CRCT!!

We will spend the next two weeks on Astronomy and the last 2 weeks reviewing. We have a big job ahead of us, but we will succeed.

Today in class, students studied the Astronomy Vocabulary List. They were given a status report showing what they are missing for the 4th 9 Weeks.

Have a great weekend and get ready to work hard the next 4 weeks.

January 8th and 9th

Today and tomorrow, all 6th grade Science students will be taking the Science benchmark test!!!

Students will work on a booklet about Earthquakes. Specifically, student will answer and illustrate the following questions:

What causes Earthquakes?
Where do Earthquakes occur?
How does elastic rebound relate to Earthquakes?
3 Major Tectonic Plate Boundaries
What are Earthquake Zones?
How do Seismic Waves (P, S Waves and Surface Waves) travel?

The Earthquake booklet will be due on Monday/Tuesday the 12th and 13th.

Remember all Science Fair Projects are due on January 15th!!!

Happy New Year!!!!

The countdown is on for the CRCT!!! We have 3 months to complete Hydrology, Meteorology and Astronomy.

We can do it!!!

For January 6th and 7th, students reviewed Plate Tectonics by completing SQ3R for pages 194-196. Next, students viewed a video clip about Plate Tectonics. The video will guide us in a discussion about Earthquakes and  Volcanoes.

Additionally, we cleaned out our Science Notebooks and filed any graded papers. Students were told what handouts and notes needed to be in their notebook. If students need any worksheets, they were instructed to make a list and turn it in. Ms. Q will fill the order by Friday because Notebooks will be graded on Friday along with their Agendas.

Remember Science Fair Projects are due on January 15th!!!!!

December 10th and 11th

Bill Nye the Science Guy knows his science.

Did you know that the earth is made up of three layers? Crust, Mantle and Core

Today we learned about the layers of the earth as well as the lithosphere, the asthenosphere,  mesosphere, inner and outer core. Remember, scientists have had inferred what the mantle and crust are like.

Students worked on a diagream of the layers of the earth that also included facts.

Remember, your rock cycle diagram is due on Friday as well as the SQ3R (90-111).

December 8th and 9th

Rocks are in our Heads!!!

We completed a mind map on rocks and wrote descritive sentences about each type of rock.

Students view a Video clip about the Rock Cycle.

December 5th

6-4 got a free day to make up work!!!

Way to go 6-4!!

December 3rd and 4th

Today,

We reviewed Minerals today. I have attached the powerpoint slide. Make sure you can answer these questions.

Next, we completed a mind map on the three types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Students used the following web site to answer questions about the three types of rocks. I have attached the web site address as well as the mind map.

December 1st and 2nd

I hope you had a wonderful Holiday !!!

Get ready to work because we have 3 weeks to finish Geology.

Today, we worked on a mind map about Minerals. I have attached the mind map for those of you who need it. You can find the answers on pages 66-73 in your Science Book.

Hw: Due by Friday, SQ3R for Chapter 3 - Minerals pp. 68-79. Remember, you turn the headings into questions and then answer the questions.

Project: The Science Findings Project was given out today. The project is due on 12/8. Students were given detailed instructions about how to complete the project. Science Findings is a puzzle with a Scavenger Hunt included. The final picture must be colored also.

Upcoming Events: Science Fair Project!!!!

November 13th and 14th

Today, students had a chance to work on any missing work for the 4.5 week period.

All students received what they needed to make up. If students were caught up, then they had time to work on their "Agents of Erosion" Booklet due on the 14th.

November 11th and 12th

Today was an exciting day in Science Class. Students participated in an erosion lab. We looked at a stream table. Some of the questions we answered were: What happens if we put a rock in front of the water source? What happens if we put a sand dune in front of the water source? What happens if we build a dam?

Students drew a diagram and answered these questions in their learning logs. Remember, learning logs stay in the classroom. You can make up assignments and staple them in your learning log though. So far this year, we have 4 entries in our learning logs. Learning Logs will count as a grade during the second 4.5 week period.

Learning Log Entries:

1) Classifying our Soil

2) Invention Quotes

3) Weathering and Erosion Lab

4) Erosion Lab (stream table)
